You work hard to create the best customer experience while ensuring you meet or exceed business needs. While balancing everyone&#8217;s needs, you\u2019ve got to prioritize most users&#8217; needs as much as possible, which means eliminating wording and terms that can create friction or alienate many people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that you\u2019re intentionally trying to dumb your content down; it\u2019s about using the minimum amount of viable content you can. Every word, every letter matters, especially when writing micro copy. How can we create user-friendly content that doesn\u2019t alienate and isn\u2019t intrusive? Focus on crafting human-centered content. And for the love of all that is holy, stop using these seemingly innocent terms in your UX writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes content human-centered?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this context, human-centered content refers to writing that is designed with the user in mind. Your goal is to help users understand precisely what they need to do as they navigate your interface. This means minimizing technical jargon and being deliberate in your language choices to reduce any potential friction.<\/span><\/p><h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop using these words in UX writing<\/span><\/h1><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directional wording<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to avoid directional terms like &#8220;right,&#8221; &#8220;left,&#8221; &#8220;upper,&#8221; and &#8220;lower&#8221; to ensure your UX writing is inclusive and accessible to all users. These words don\u2019t mean much to users who have trouble seeing the page or those using screen readers. You can guide users onward using description wording and UI elements they\u2019ll understand. For example, instead of \u201cSee the page by going to the tools menu in the upper left\u201d, consider using wording such as \u201cGo to Tools\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condescending language<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Words such as &#8220;easy,&#8221; &#8220;simple,&#8221; or &#8220;just&#8221; can be perceived as condescending. They might make users feel judged or undervalued if they encounter difficulties with certain tasks. Instead, aim to use language that empowers and supports your users, reserving space for words that truly add value. Not everyone will find certain tasks easy. Don\u2019t alienate those who need extra time or consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alarming alerts<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing more concerning than seeing bold, red text screaming \u201cWARNING\u201d while you\u2019re trying to check your bank balance. Terms like &#8220;warning&#8221; and &#8220;alert&#8221; can be alarming and may lead users to believe they have made a mistake or are on an incorrect path. Opt for gentler terms, like &#8220;Note,&#8221; to draw users&#8217; attention to important information. If you really need to get someone\u2019s attention, consider other methods such as pop-ups or modals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the phrase &#8220;click here&#8221; is just not done. Experienced UX writers shy away from it, preferring more specific actions like &#8220;Continue&#8221; or &#8220;Sign Up.&#8221; It&#8217;s essential to be intentional with every word you choose, and &#8220;click here&#8221; should be listed in your style guide under \u201cWords to Avoid.\u201d Additionally, remember that users may be using your app on a variety of devices, so steer clear of device-specific terms like &#8220;click&#8221; and &#8220;tap.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX for all<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just a few words I\u2019ve left behind in my UX career. You may have others. What other words can be problematic? Are certain words okay if in a certain context? What are your don\u2019ts when it comes to balancing the needs of the user with the needs of the business?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For next time: Have you ever experienced pushback when trying to explain your rationale for your word choice?
